“The Green Dream”
is a coiled piece made from Crank Raku clay, which stands approximately 51cm high x 32cm wide. The piece has been indented with pattern and fired to 1160 c. Coloured
glaze has been rubbed into the carving and wiped away, as well as being
painted on to the surface area before being fired to 1080c. Coloured
enamels, gold lustre and mother-of-pearl have then been applied to some
areas of the outside to give more definition and fired again to 800c. A final layer of paint has been added and heated to a temperature of 150c to add a metallic raised effect. When
the glazing process has been completed, several hand made objects made
from clay and resin have been wired to the rim of the piece inside and
out. The piece sits on three glass cockle jars which have been filled
with found objects.
Inspired
by the need to really consider the Green question, this piece attempts
to portray the road ahead and the inevitable difficulties that
reversing our current practice will involve. Little fish swim around
the top of the piece encapsulating bits of our world showing us a mini
archive of things that may disappear in the future without due care and
attention. The Lenin heads are taken as a symbol of community
contribution, rather than communism as we have seen it in the past,
encouraging us to work together as a global group rather than as
isolated businessmen, driven by money and power. Hopelessly idealistic?
I hope not. This piece has a calm soft gentleness about it and is
named, dated and signed by the artist October 2009.
