Look after the fruits of the Earth

£450.00

“Look After the Fruits of the Earth”

is a coiled piece made from White St Thomas clay, which stands approximately 52cm high (including the stand) x 23cm wide. The piece has then been indented with pattern and fired to 1160 c. Coloured glaze has been rubbed into the carving and wiped away, as well as being painted on to the surface area before being fired to 1080c. Coloured enamels, gold and platinum lustres and mother-of-pearl have then been applied to some areas of the outside to give more definition and fired again to 800c. A final layer of paint has been added and heated to a temperature of 150c to add a metallic raised effect. When the glazing process has been completed, a range of hand made objects made from clay and resins or found objects have been wired or glued to the piece inside and out. The piece sits on a stand made from objects which I have collected when walking ,as well as a painting of a pomegranate on a pebble I made set amongst the dried seeds and nuts. The inside of the piece is crammed with lovely rubber animals, which my children played with when they were young. It is one of my favourite pieces.

I am frequently astonished at the beauty of the natural world and this piece aims to show that beauty, in a picture book illustrative way. Driven by the desire to “do something” after watching the terrible film “THREADS” for the second time on the internet recently (the first was about 20 years ago when it was first made and meant that I would always believe wholeheartedly in CND) this piece is meant to work as a pair with “The Three Rs”. I hope it does something to encourage us to make a change.

It is named, dated and signed by the artist October 2009.
